Did you know Musk had a grandfather born in Minnesota?
Elon Musk was born in South Africa, but his family roots run through the American Midwest.
His maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, the father of Maye Musk, was born in a log cabin in Pequot, Minnesota, in 1902. His family moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, when he was a young boy.
After losing his farm during the Great Depression, Haldeman worked as a cowboy and rodeo performer, and he became known for bronco riding and rope tricks. He later became a chiropractor, a pilot and a politician, and in 1950 he moved his family to South Africa, where Maye raised Elon.
Musk has said his grandfather’s love of adventure and risk had a big influence on him.
